How does the Frontier Solutions process of installation differ from traditional methods?
Traditional methods use a bulldozer or trencher to dig an open cut. The silt fence is installed manually, and then the trench must be filled and the fencing must be staked. Our process uses static slicing to simultaneously cut a narrow slice and lay the fence 6”-8” below the surface. This makes the process dramatically faster while having virtually no impact on the surrounding vegetation. It also places the silt fence at a consistent depth for maximum sediment control.
What kind of fabric is used for silt fencing?
We use fabric that meets DOT, EPA and DNR requirements. The rolls of fencing are stamped with a “grade” (similar to the way a 2’x4’ is stamped). An approved fabric should have uniform small holes for water pass-through, which are visible when the fabric is held up to the light. It should also be virtually impossible to separate the weave and/or poke a finger through the fabric.
When should I use silt fencing?
Frontier Solutions will come out to your construction site and assess the risks that are present. We will help you determine if silt fencing is the right solution, or if you need to take additional or different precautions to meet SWPPP guidelines.
Where can I place silt fencing?
Frontier Solutions can install silt fencing in virtually any location where we can drive a skid steer. We will work with you to place the fencing where it is needed.
Who maintains the silt fencing once it is in place?
If you choose to protect your investment with a maintenance contract, Frontier Solutions will come to your site periodically to make sure the fence is operating properly. We will remove any accumulated sediment and redistribute it. We will also inspect the fencing and repair any damage that has been caused due to sediment movement. Note that because we install our silt fencing at least 6”-8” below the surface, repairs tend to minimal. In most situations, we can simply replace stakes to be in compliance.
How soon can you install it?
We can usually install within 24-48 hours.
How far apart do you place the stakes?
We typically place stakes approximately every 7’-8’, with more stakes on turns to increase rigidity. We also double-stake where there is more concentrated sheet flow.
How long should I leave the silt fencing in place?
We recommend that you leave the silt fencing in place until all exposed soils are completely vegetated.
What is your market service area?
We will install silt fencing in Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Indiana.
